I find it interesting that we actually invented a "holiday" so that every year we can get drunk and say "Well this last year really sucked! Here's to the next!". Like the consumer pawn that I am, I purchased some Absolute Vodka and Kaulua for this year's "celebration". Then again 2002 could be worse! Who knows? Frankly, the Hubbert peak-out on global oil production will probably occur sometime within the next 10 years. When that hits and energy production begin to decline, just wait! If you think things really suck now you have not seen anything yet. As I see it our economy ultimately runs on energy to drive all the machinery of production and transportation, and once that depletes out on us the economy will most likely completely fail. I think it is likely that by the time we are in our retirement years that socio-economic conditions in the US will be similar to those in post Soviet Russia. Retirement? what retirement?! All those 401k plans IRAs and other investment schemes will evaporate into smoke. Honestly, we are probably at or near the cusp of human development. As I see it the only environmentally sustainable society that can exist is a stone aged society. I think the next few centuries will probably be a painful period of population collapse and decay where we will ultimately end up back in a situation similar to what existed tens of thousands of years ago. The big difference is that back then the Earth was rich and abundant with life, and in the future the planet will be totally contaminated and depleted of biological diversity and biomass. cheers, Lawrence B. 40% of the Artic ice has melted the last 20 years.
The South Pole is treading on thin ice, according to a study presented yesterday that found rapid thinning in three of Antarctica's largest glaciers. In the last 10 years, the glaciers have lost up to 150 feet of thickness, or a collective 37.6 cubic miles of ice. According to the authors of the study, who shared their conclusions during a panel on the effects of global warming on the world's cold regions at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union, that's enough to raise the world's sea levels one-sixtieth of an inch single-handedly (so to speak). At current melting rates, the glaciers could begin to float in 150 years and would vanish in around 1,500 years -- a long time for us, but a blink of the eye in geological time. Some scientists blame global warming for the melting ice, but others doubt that the relatively small temperature change in the last century could affect Antarctic climes.

Instead of houseboats, try house submarines. Or at least design your house boat like the Merrimac, of Civil War fame, so that the sloped sides makes it wind resistant.
