If I had one hour to talk to a classroom of high school kids, this is what I'd say.
Fault finding - Most of us have a little voice in the back of our head that keeps repeating "I'm no good, you're no good, we're no good." Noticed how you felt your energy level was depleted just by reading that previous sentence. That's what we do to ourselves all day long by "owning" that negative message.
Meditation - Just 15 minutes a day being in a meditative state puts us in a noncritical relaxed state of mind that's so refreshing.
Gentleness - People who are gentle with themselves and others reveal that they were raised with unqualified love.
Violence - Some say it's genetic. Some say it's upbringing. Some say it's hormones. But as an Astrologer for 30 years, I can look at someones natal chart and see who's more likely to be frustrated and who's more likely to react violently when they're frustrated. Also, it's amazing how self-righteous abusive people are when they justify hurting people emotionally or physically.
Careers - the two most important jobs in the world are motherhood and teaching.
Guys & Patience - Women are more verbal and have a better understanding of the dynamics of their relationships. So, when you feel that the woman in your life is driving you crazy, so what? That's why meditation is so important. Don't get violent. Listen to what your woman is telling you.
Priorities - A woman's most important job is to ensure that the world is safe for her child. A man's most important job is to ensure that the world is a safe place for his wife to do her job.
Finding true love - You're more likely to find love by pursuing fun. People obsessed with pursuing love may be making themselves miserable since they may be passing up on what feels good - fun. Besides, people who are good for you make you feel good about yourself when you're around them.
Spirituality - Too many of us evaluate ourselves and other's with our arbitrary rules. That's one reason why it's so crucial to study a spiritual discipline. To stay on track with spiritual values reduces people running each other down by fault finding. No one ever said that acquiring wisdom is easy. That's why spirituality requires discipline.
The Truth - People who lie aren't concerned with their spiritual growth or your spiritual growth. They want to have you be misinformed so that they can manipulate you. Politicians are a great example of people telling half-truths.
Your Attitude - Your energy level, your self-image, your view of the world are all a part of your attitude. Attitude precedes everything you do. Regardless of how well educated you are, how articulate you are, how good looking you are, how well connected your family is; if you don't have a wholesome life-affirming attitude, then your projects won't go very far.
Career choice - As Freud said, "To love is to work." Follow your passion. Ignore considerations of income or prestige. Find a job that you love to do even if you weren't getting paid for it. You'll be a happier person. Your spouse will enjoy having you around. Your children will enjoy you if you're a happy person. And you'll be presenting your children the wisest of role-models.
Who are you? - Some fools are willing to kill or die for their beliefs. Some fools are willing to injure themselves or others in a fit of cruelty. Do you have opinions and emotions or do they have you? Why let the tail wag the dog? Contrary to what you may think, you aren't your opinions. Contrary to what you may feel, you aren't your emotions. Look up the definitions of the words "decernment" and "detachment". Be decerning enough to detach your self-identity from your opinions and your emotions.
Drugs - More violence is committed by people who are drunk, then by all the other drugs put together. More people kill themselves by smoking tobacco than by the ingestion of all of the other drugs put together. We'll know that the so-called War Against Drugs isn't a sham when alcohol and tobacco are put at the top of the hit list.
Representational Government - The more viable political parties, the higher the percentage of the population register to vote. People who argue in favor of only wanting two political parties like the fact that 45% of Americans are so dissatisfied with the current sham political system that they don't see the point of registering to vote.
Studies - For academic diversity and a well rounded personality study: gymnastics (for coordination, fitness, poise, and self-confidence), mathematics (calculus for market tracking), music (singing, too, for fun and therapy), and a foreign language (preferably Portuguese so that you can understand all of the other speakers of a Romance language) to get out of an ethnocentric or jingoistic rut.
